Wild Food Cafe, Neal's Yard — Covent Garden
Neal's Yard is an awesome little spot in Covent Garden. After my HIIT class at Another_Space I was on the hunt for somewhere healthy to refuel close by. Google directed me to Wild Food Cafe and I am so glad it did. I've never visited the square before, but walking in through a small alley onto a brightly coloured, open space that looks like an Italian street on acid is pretty cool. It was a gorgeous day so there were people sat outside bars and cafes chilling out, and it just had a great relaxed vibe.
Wild Food Cafe was up a small flight of stairs, and had windows opened wide onto the square below. Decorated in a haphazard yet comfortable fashion, it felt welcoming and friendly. Everything was brightly coloured and the space just invited you in straight away. The staff were super friendly and all looked happy to be there — which is a rare quality!
Don't get me wrong — I am no vegan by any stretch of the imagination, but their menu was so varied that I wasn't bothered about the lack of meat. I eat some crazy shit, but there were things on there that I couldn't quite work out. I just threw caution to the wind and ordered anything — once again, glad I did.
I had the 'Baked Sweet Potato Inter-stellar Slices' (Sweet potato with an amazing cashew aioli scattered with seeds) and 'What I Did this Spring' (Chicory, aubergine and nori with a red pepper mayo that I could eat on everything). The flavours were immense, I never thought veg could taste so good.
Everything is cooked right in front of you in the open kitchen so there is nothing to hide. I chose to sit at the bar and felt comfortable snacking away and downing the free water while checking out the space. The more time you spent observing, the more you noticed little elements about the place. There were crystals dotted around, Himalayan Salt tea light holders, little statues and an amazing mural. I could've sat there for hours.
I imagine it would be a great place to be on a summer evening — with the sun setting and the windows wide open, candles lit and a really chilled atmosphere. I'll definitely be returning because I want to try everything else on that menu!
