Recipe — Detox & Protein Hit Smoothie Bowl
I've been running a little personal experiment lately — I'm trying to judge whether my body needs artificial supplements (pre workout, whey protein powder etc) to get the most out my training. I've given up on all of these things for the time being, and I'm experimenting with natural ingredients to see if I can naturally push my body to its limits.
I started to rely on pre workout, particularly for my early morning sessions. When I didn't take it, I was making excuses for poor performance and fatigue but then realised that I shouldn't be letting myself drop my standards because of a bunch of chemicals. Don't get me wrong — I may go back to using these and I have absolutely nothing against them, but in my eyes if I can work out how to get the same effects naturally, then why not?
So this is where my research has led me. I'll be posting about my experiences with natural pre workout later on, but for now I'm gonna focus on protein. I've always had to force myself to drink protein shakes — I'm not keen no matter what flavour I try. I love adding the powder to porridge and other food, but drinking it just pains me. I managed to wean myself onto it eventually, but a short break off it and I'm back to square one.
Everyone knows (surely?) that eggs are a great source of protein. But there's only so many times I can eat four boiled eggs after a workout. I like to take my protein gradually throughout the day rather than focusing it all in one hit — so lots of chicken, salmon, spinach etc. Simple. But is there something out there that can give us a bigger dose without the need for sickly shakes?
This is where I found spirulina.
Spirulina represents a biomass of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) that can be consumed by humans and other animals.

Spirulina is said to contain 60% protein by weight, and all the essential amino acids. So a single tablespoon of spirulina can hold 4g of protein. Please note that I'm not a scientist, this is just what I've found through my research. But as long as it's natural then I'm prepared to believe it.
In my opinion it has no taste when mixed into other foods, it's an amazing blue-green colour and contains so much goodness. Introducing, the Detoxifying Spirulina Smoothie Bowl.
This recipe makes enough for one large bowl, and it tastes awesome. I ate mine for breakfast and felt comfortably full until lunch time.
Half a mango
Half an avocado
A handful of cashew nuts
1 tsp spirulina
1 tsp honey
1 tsp hemp seeds
1 tsp chia seeds
1 tsp desiccated coconut
Half a teaspoon of natural vanilla extract
A selection of the ingredients used in the smoothie
Your favourite fruits
Add all of your smoothie ingredients to a blender and blitz until smooth. You want this a little thicker than the average smoothie — think heavy yoghurt. If you need to add a little water then do it sparingly.
Pour your smoothie out into a bowl and top with literally whatever you like — the ingredients to the smoothie, your favourite fruits, and granola is great to add a bit of crunch.
