Aerial Yoga Swings — at the Om Yoga Show
At the show, this is one of the workshop classes available that you can pay and book on to; these are the cream of the crop. They sell out pretty quickly though so make sure you book your tickets online before! I chose to do a couple, including the Aerial Yoga Swings Class. All I can say is wow.
It was a totally different way of doing yoga without a doubt — getting the confidence to trust the fabric was the initial challenge but once you let go and realise you you’re not going to fall, everything starts to flow. Our teacher showed us some great poses, from cuddling up inside the hammock (bliss) to full inversions with bends and twists. I got further into Dancer's Pose than I ever have on land, as gravity works with you as you bend around those swashes of fabric in a really gentle way.
I love inversions in yoga, but I know a lot of people get very nervous about them. There was something totally different about inverting on a swing. It felt a lot more natural, and so relaxing. It just reminded me of being a kid and playing on swings and bars, spinning upside down just for the fun of it. There is less hesitation and worry in your mind as you feel supported, and you can trust yourself to try things with a little more confidence.
I immediately fell in love with the swings. I wanted to get one right away and never get off it. Hopefully soon I'll get hold of one of my own and post some pictures and videos of my progress — I might even let a few of my lucky students have a go too!
Head to the Aerial Yoga Swings website and read their blog — there's loads of handy tips about trying your first class, and reasons why you should definitely do it.
